Bye & Bye 04:24
BYE AND BYE (Womack) You gotta pick this Harris Teeter. Is there no place else you could move? I still gotta see ya, gotta go through the hello, how are you, with no groove. Your body still makes me a young man. Your brain’s still a bomb you can throw. I had me a nice hard decision to make All those years ago And I really do think I loved you I was young, I was horny and high! Bye & Bye Bye & Bye You don’t ask why, you just say I’m sorry, it happened, goodbye. It’s a pity, I miss our conversations. You could talk a man down to the bone. You’d ance all alone to start every show In some skirt you’d barely have on I guess it was no hangin’ matter It’s no capital crime I got what I wanted And what I deserved And now all we got left is this rhyme But I really do think I loved you I sure can’t you didn’t try Bye & Bye Bye & Bye You don’t ask why you just say I’m sorry, it happened, goodbye. Oh great, we get to check out together too! With our children in tow Feeling that nice hard decision I made All those years ago I’d’ve made you a miserable husband You’d’ve made me a miserable wife. Please scaqn your damn item Please shove it in a bag And get on with the rest of your life Yeah I really do think I loved you. And maybe I will til I die Bye & Bye Bye & Bye You don’t ask why you just say I’m sorry, it happened, goodbye

I’m Too Old to Feel That Way Right Now You still got what it takes to turn my head I guess my heart was only playing dead I’d like to reach across the years and make it up somehow But I’m too old to feel that way right now My heart has know its share of ups and downs So heavy it gets hard to haul around Your face is all it takes to wake it up somehow But I’m too old to feel that way right now The touch of your hand leaves me inspired But I’m set in my ways and kinda tired I suppose if we tried we could shake it up somehow But I’m too old to feel that way right now The past is the past, it’s dead and gone All anyone can do is carry on I suppose if we tried we could shake it up somehow But I’m too old to feel that way right now

On & Off the Wagon I’m on and off the wagon. I go from day to day. On and off the wagon. I live my life that way. Sometimes I like the wagon. Sometimes I like to walk. On and off the wagon. And I’ve had me a ball. I’ve learned to know my limits. I’ve learned to pass them by. I’ve learned to make my wife moan. I’ve learned how to make her cry. Sometimes I like the window. Sometimes I like the aisle. On and off the wagon. I’ve been this way a while. I’m smart as a whip. I’m dumb as wood! I’d sleep with the angels, if I only could! But that’s not going to happen. Not a guy like me. On and off the wagon. All locked in to being free. Sometimes I like the wagon. Sometimes I like the street. On and off the wagon. On and off my feet. On and off the wagon. On and off my feet.

90 Miles An Hour Down A Dead-End Street I went to Indy in the rain To a club that wasn’t ever gonna have me again I had Chianti in the seat 90 miles an hour down a dead-end street I was lonely. I was tired, I work for myself and I still get fired I came from Cleveland, with a heart of **** Stung, pummeled, kicked and a bit I love the Lord or at least I try Where in the hell will I go when I die I like to the Stones I like dogs I like late-night drunken dialogues I went to Indy in the rain To a club that wasn’t ever gonna have me again I had Chianti in the seat 90 miles an hour down a dead-end street I turn my travels into rhyme Life takes up a whole lotta my time I still like bootie on the street I see But I’m not as horny as I used to be And thank God for that it’s a pain in the **** Waiting for pangs of conscience to pass Now I just drink except when I don’t You’re either gonna get a good show or you won’t The highway was alive with a dangerous man Acting as foolish as he possibly can I drove on to Indy to play me a show Or maybe just play half a show and then go Drove on away with my wine and my weed Thinking a spanking is what I need Found me a hotel and get off of the road Got into bed and felt kinda cold I didn’t get busted, nobody died Got another tomorrow to show a new side Throw out the bad and keep all the good Right now I don’t even know if I could All of my blessings and all of my gifts Teetering on the edge of a cliff Drinking and driving all day long Dancing with the devil, looking for songs I’ve done everything I could to kill myself And take other people with me By all rights I should be in prison The Lord is my shepherd but Lord how I want I went to Indy in the rain To a club that wasn’t gonna have me again I had Chianti in the seat 90 miles an hour down a dead-end street

Guilty Snake Blues (Tommy Womack) Politics bore me, let’s not bring it up at all Politics bore me, let’s not bring it up at all You’re either preaching to the choir, or talking to the wall I’m gonna find me a meeting and I’m not gonna share I’m gonna find me a meeting and I’m not gonna share For once in my life just wanna be some guy sittin’ there I got a guilty snake, coiled around my brain I got a guilty snake, coiled around my brain It’s gonna die of malnutrition or it’s gonna drive me insane Could be one of so many one-too-manys I’ve had Could be one of so many one-too-manys I’ve had Could be a girl in Mississippi who’d be happy to hear I feel bad I’ve been on the road a long and lonely time I’ve been on the road a long and lonely time It’s been both a downward spiral and an uphill climb If you don’t mind me saying, there’s a serpent in your tree If you don’t mind me saying, there’s a serpent in your tree That forbidden fruit you’re holding is sorely tempting me If it wasn’t screwed on I’d’ve long ago lost my head If it wasn’t screwed on I’d’ve long ago lost my head Somedays I’m just amazed I find my way out of bed I said what I said, it was wrong, or was taken wrong, and now it’s all this I said what I said, it was wrong, or was taken wrong, and now it’s all this I’m out on New Year’s Eve, with no one to kiss You can hide inside the sadness, hide behind the shame You can hide inside the sadness, hide behind the shame Every time you masturbate God kills a kitten and a mark goes by your name You can pray for mercy, for your fellow man to be kind You can pray for mercy, for your fellow man to be kind You can pray for anything, but don’t expect God to change his mind

Tommy Womack “Now What!” Track Talk

(A travel through the songs on Tommy’s new release!)

1: “Play That Cheap Trick, Cheap Trick Play” – I was cleaning the kitchen and listening to Cheap Trick when I got the lyrics in my head. I started writing lyrics in between washing dishes. From there the song roams around some familiar topics for me: the love for my family, self-doubt, and playing my gigs, whether they ever pay off in worldwide fame or not. My favorite part is the nick of Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” at the end.

2: “It Doesn’t Have to be That Good” – Another song about domestic life and coming to grips with the notion that not every moment in home life HAS to be some massively satisfying moment. It doesn’t have to be that good; it doesn’t have to be that bad. By the way, the album can be looked at as a box set of 6 singles. Track 1 the A side, this one the B-side, and on and on through the record.

3: “Bye & Bye” – A song about running into an old flame in the grocery store, and my mind flooded with images of life back then when we were together, and how for a moment they make my life now humdrum in comparison. Side A of the second single.

4: “I’m Too Old to Feel That Way Right Now” – The B-side, where I stand up for myself to the old flame a bit. Your face and body still make me do the hula-hoop inside, but baby, I’m just too old to feel that way right now. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to curl up with a good book and a tall glass of Metamucil. Nighty-night.

5: “On & Off the Wagon” – Oy, if THIS isn’t the story of my life! I have tried “controlled drinking” so many times in my life. I’ve wound up drunk a lot too.

6: “90 Miles an Hour Down a Dead-End Street” – Already a live favorite, this is a rap, just voice and drums, telling a true and terrible tale of driving from Cleveland to Indianapolis drinking Chianti and proceeding to blow the whole Indy gig in a big, bad way. Like all my spoken word pieces, it rambles over lots of topical terrain. Not hard to see why this is the B-side to Track 5.

7: “Guilty Snake Blues” – I had a lot of these lyrics for years. It’s about all the lust I’ve ever had in my heart. I think. Jim Hoke blows a mean saxophone on this one.

8: “Pot Head Blues” – Maybe my personal favorite on the record, and an unlikely choice. It’s a quiet little acoustic number lamenting all the years I’ve lost to being stoned.

9: “I Love You to Pieces” – I like this track a lot too. It’s a good greasy rocker. The words are all about flirting with a pretty girl. (For me, it’s my wife. For you, make your own choice.) I also like the two verses of plain jamming with the guitars and harp at the end of the song. It’s not all lyrics and plots here, sometimes it’s just musical fun going on.

10: “Over the Hill” – The B-side love song going along with Track 9’s A-side. I had this tune in my head for years and it finally found it’s home. I love the horns on this track. Kinda reminds me of Donavan’s “Mellow Yellow”.

11: ”Wishes Do Come True” – A quiet interlude, written with Irene Kelley. It’s a song of eternal love, but there are some disquieting aspects there too. There’s a whiff of infidelity in there, but it’s never defined. Sometimes it’s best not to define some things after all.

12: “Let’s Have Another Cigarette” – On my “There, I Said It!” record I had a song called “I Want a Cigarette”, so hey, let’s have another one. This time, fidelity wins out. I’m flirting with a cute girl before heading out of town to the next gig. Nothing’s going to happen. I’m too old to feel that way right now. Watch my taillights fading out of town. And that’s my record. I’ll see you when I’m back in town. If you’ve got the stomach for it. Start the darn thing all over again.
